Breast Enlargement

Introduction

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, has become one of the most frequently requested cosmetic surgery procedures by women of all ages. It is most commonly performed to increase the size of small breasts, correct a difference in size between the breasts, and for breast reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer. A breast implant is inserted either behind the breast tissue of each breast or behind the pectoralis major muscle, the major muscle of the chest wall, thereby increasing the size of the breast.

All breast implants used have an outer silicone shell, and are filled with cohesive silicone gel. The size and selection of implants is something which you will discuss with your surgeon in detail at consultation.

Final Result

Visible results can be seen immediately. However it can take between two and four months to appreciate the final result. Wearing a support bra helps during the recovery period.

Bruising

You can expect slight bruising.

Swelling

Usually following your operation, you may have only a little swelling but this can vary between individual cases.

Discomfory

You will have some discomfort after the operation. Pain relieving medication will be given to you after surgery to keep this to a minimum.

Scarring

There will be scars about 4-5cm in the creases below the breast where the implants have been inserted. These will fade over time as the wounds heal, usually by 3 months. The scars continue to improve and are just visible at six months.

Recovery

The decision about when to return to work and resume normal activities depends on how fast you heal and how well you feel.

Breast Feeding

Yes, the implants do not affect the normal function of the breast tissue.
