Removal of Fat from the Male Chest - Gynaecomastia
Gynaecomastia is a medical term describing excessive growth of breast tissue in men
Symptoms and causes of Gynaecomastia
Overdeveloped breast tissue in men can be a result of being overweight, or having lost weight, or overgrowth of the underlying breast tissue. Occasionally drug use can cause breast development as a side effect. Teenage boys in particular can be affected, but at that age it could simply be a side effect of increased hormone levels during puberty. The small developed breast may disappear as hormone levels alter during late teenage. Gynacoemastia or Male breast, also known as man boobs can also be a symptom of other underlying health problems, and sufferers should consult a doctor to ensure they are not suffering from additional medical conditions.
Treatment For Gynaecomastia
The symptoms of gynaecomastia can be treated with procedures such as male breast reduction surgery. This treatment is on the rise, as 40 to 60 per cent of men are said to be suffering from excessively large breasts. Male Breast reduction surgery can remove the excess fat and leave the chest flatter and firmer. Many sufferers of gynaecomastia look into breast reductions to return their figures to the way they looked before developing the condition.
What does Surgery Involve?
Depending upon the severity of the problem there are different operative approaches to a achieve an improvement. Some cases can be dealt with via liposuction alone, others require more extensive incisions and therefore scars to deal with the excess breast tissue and skin. It is important not to swap the problem of a slightly large chest for unsightly scars – so all this must be discussed before an operation.
When Liposuction is used to remove the fatty tissue,.small incisions are made around the nipple and at other sites in the chest. A small metal tube (cannula) is used to suck out the fatty tissue. If necessary glandular tissue is also removed through incisions at the border of the nipple. The incisions are then sutured to give a flatter, firmer and better-contoured chest. Any stitches will be of the dissolving type and so do not need to be removed.
Local or General Anaesthetic ?
Gynaecomastia surgery is performed under local or general anaesthetic depending upon the severity of the problem. It may be necessary to stay in the hospital overnight. Patients are recommended to have a week off work after surgery to ensure time to rest and recover comfortably at home. A compression garment then helps to reduce bruising and swelling over the next few weeks. Any strenuous work or activity should also be avoided for several weeks. There will be some scarring, and this will depend on the amount of tissue removed, but this will fade significantly over time.
How long does the surgery take?
The surgery will take up to 1-3 hours depending on the individual patient. Most patients can go home on the day of the surgery, however some will stay in the hospital for a couple of days.
What can I expect from a Gynaecomastia?
As long as your expectations are realistic, the chances are you will be pleased with the results. You will have a flatter, better-contoured chest that is more pleasing to yourself.
Recovery after surgery
There will be some swelling and bruising of the treated area and to help reduce this you will wear a firm Lycra garment which is worn for 3 weeks. The worst of your swelling will go down in the first few weeks however, it may be a couple of months before the full effect of the breast reduction surgery is apparent. Most patients can resume full activity, including exercise, in about a month following surgery for Gynaecomastia.
Recovery time
Recovery is normally between two to three weeks, however 1-2 days after surgery you should be on your feet. It is important not to carry out vigorous activities for the first five days after the surgery. You can return to work and resume most normal activities after three weeks and begin exercise after six weeks.
